Rural retail specialists, McCormick Property Development (MPD), are expanding their footprint in the Eastern Cape.

Flagstaff Square Perspective

The company has commenced with construction on two sites that will complement their existing retail offering in the province.

MPD broke ground at ‘Flagstaff Square’ in the last week of September with opening planned for the final quarter of 2021. A development that has been 12 years in the making, Flagstaff Square will be a double level mall anchored by Shoprite and Roots Butchery. The 10 800sqm development is over 70% let with full service offerings from Clicks, Absa and Capitec Bank and includes a substantial fashion offering from Truworths, Markhams, Sportscene, Ackermans, Pep, Power Fashion and Dodos.

“Flagstaff Square epitomizes the new standard of rural retail that our developments have evolved into,” explains CEO of MPD, Jason McCormick.

“Working together with our local partners, Emayapondo Properties, we will bring quality retail to those that deserve it most and completely transform the retail landscape of the area. Our goal for almost 40 years has been to provide quality, affordable retail opportunities to communities that previously had no access to it. Flagstaff Square will deliver exactly that.”

Development also recently commenced on Mt Frere Mall in Mt Frere. This development is in partnership with AJ Property Holdings and will include almost 20 000sqm of leasable area in the first phase.

Mt Frere will host a number of national retailors whilst still ensuring that local development and investment are a major priority. “We believe in identifying and upskilling entrepreneurial community members in each scheme we develop,” explains Jason. “In this way we are able to provide real, tangible opportunities for community members in and around each scheme, thus ensuring micro-economic development within these areas.”

The commencements of these projects in the Eastern Cape follows the development of MPD’s flagship ‘Mall of Thembisa’, a double level mall opening in November 2020 that aims to transform the face of ‘traditional’ rural retail.

Located in the burgeoning township of Thembisa, on the main thoroughfare of Olifantsfontein road, Thembisa, the 44 690sqm regional shopping centre boasts around 150 stores and is anchored by four grocers, namely Super Spar, Shoprite, Boxer and Roots Butchery. It also boasts the largest shisanyama in South Africa with the world famous Imbizo (of ‘Busy Corner’ fame) offering a triple level, VIP culinary experience.

The project has resulted in the creation of in excess of 2500 jobs during construction, with over 2000 permanent jobs once the Mall is open and trading.

“As a company, we continue to believe in the potential of South Africa and its people’s ability to bring about positive, meaningful change,” concludes Jason. “We will continue in our mission to provide quality retail to the rural communities within our country while providing a platform for community members to grow along with us.”
