Construction of the 40,000m² Highveld Mall has begun with the first concrete poured for this regional shopping centre in Emalahleni (Witbank), Mpumalanga.

Highveld Mall, which opens for trade in April next year, is being developed by the consortium of Flanagan and Gerard Property Development and Investment (50%) and Falcon Forest Trading (50%).

Highveld Mall has been described by joint venture partners Falcon Forest Trading as paving the way to a season of job creation and prosperity in Emalahleni as it is the first regional shopping centre for the visitors and residents of both Emalahleni and Mpumalanga.

The developers have ensured that local contractors and labour are used in the construction of Highveld Mall, thus sharing opportunities with the local community. Local contractors will benefit greatly from the R230m building contract.

Construction milestones are being quickly reached as two local subcontractors have already begun work. Witbank Brick Workers have already supplied more than 4-million bricks. Holcim is the supplier of all cement used for construction.

Ownership of 10% equity has been made available to the local community and negotiations are under way and being facilitated by the city mayor.

Highveld Mall is adjacent to the Tsogo Sun-owned and operated Ridge Casino and Entertainment Centre.

The interface with the casino is being worked on and details will be announced soon.

The fully air-conditioned Highveld Mall consists of about 120 stores with parking for 24,000 cars, with 80% of its tenant mix comprising national retailers and 40 stores being allocated exclusively for the local community.

The tenant mix is both varied and wide ranging, providing the ideal comparative shopping location. Anchor tenants are Woolworths, Pick 'n Pay and Edgars.

Flanagan and Gerard have secured respected national retailers such as Boardmans, CNA, Jet, Mr Price, Mr Price Home, Mr Price Sport, Truworths, Identity, Dis-Chem Pharmacy, Cape Union Mart, Ackermans, Ackermans Home Comforts, Pep, Milady's, Galaxy, Legit, Spur Steak Ranch, John Dory's Fish and Grill, Panarottis and News Café.

"With 75% of the stores already taken, it is confirmation that Highveld Mall has been borne out of enormous demand and will provide about 181,000 households of Emalahleni with an ideal shopping haven," says Patrick Flanagan of Flanagan and Gerard.
