Construction IndustryTHE handiwork of Group Five can be seen on some of the more notable building projects currently underway in the Cape Town metropole.

At the N1 City Mall the company is undertaking alterations and extensions to the existing shopping centre and a new single level suspended parking deck with ramps. The alterations comprise demolition and removal of the existing main entrance and entertainment area and the construction of a new mall area, food court and main entrance, as well as upgrade work to the existing mall floors and ceilings. The completion date is towards end April this year.

Other than the R240 million Media City (see separate article) for which the completion date is March next year, Group Five is also responsible for the Prestwich Street project, an office development, comprising five floors of parking and seven levels of offices with ground floor retail. This should be completed towards September this year.

The Piazza St John is a new double storey retail centre with two and a half split levels of parking and five levels of apartments. Sable Square is also a outlet shopping centre, comprising five separate two and three storey buildings on 12 000 sq m single level parking basement. The completion date is September 2006.

Group Five, in a joint venture with BL Williams & Co, is also responsible for the Claremont Library which comprises two levels of basement parking, two levels of library, common retail and four levels of office space.

On the residential side Group Five Building is involved with alterations and additions to a six storey office block which will be converted to the Intaba apartment building with 135 units. A parking basement is to be excavated and constructed in front of the existing offices. A four storey existing parking structure will be demolished and replaced by a structure to house apartments. It will have two levels of basement parking. Completion is in April 2007.

Also to be completed next year, in August, is The Bantry, a residential development of 17 units with a price range between R16 million and R25 million. It comprises seven levels – one basement parking and five levels residential units and a roof deck parking area.

Other residential projects include the Ocean View 18 storey luxury apartments, and the Metropolis, a 14 storey development of 62 units, which will be completed in August this year.

Recently completed projects include the Harbour Edge residential on the Foreshore, the Lagoon Beach Resort Hotel and 33 On Bree Street, a mixed use development.
