Property services firm Broll has launched a training academy to serve SA's commercial property industry.

The launch in Johannesburg last week came against a backdrop of concern about a dearth of skilled commercial property professionals, especially black professionals.

'This academy, with Mvelaphanda's 50% stake in Broll, will combine to activate grassroots benefits for people in an industry that has been criticised for its slow transformation,' says Broll chief operating officer Arnold Meyer.

Broll Property Academy is co-operating with Pretoria University and the property services sector education and training authority (Seta), and is recognised by the SA Qualifications Authority.

Meyer says the academy is a meaningful step in expanding the skills pool in the property industry. 'The range of courses to be offered will help relative novices as well as veterans to improve their knowledge base,' says Meyer.

Seta CEO Ivor Blumenthal says skills development is the key to future economic growth and one of the factors that will enable SA to become competitive. 'We applaud Broll and will monitor the academy's progress with interest.'

Courses to be offered include property management, advanced property practice, leadership and strategic management. The inaugural group will be tackling a certificate in property broking designed for those already employed in the industry.
