US Open champion Retief Goosen teams up to building of a lavish golf estate in Plettenberg Bay

Johannesburg - Count Riccardo Agusta, a billionaire and member of one of the oldest aristocracies dating back to Roman Emperor Frederick II, has made another grandiose investment in South Africa, this time teaming up with reigning US Open champion Retief Goosen in the building of a lavish golf estate in Plettenberg Bay.

The Monaco-based Count is already the owner La Provance, home of Agusta Wines and La Vie De Luc mineral water in the Cape region of Franschhoek. But now the nobleman plans to extend his business interests in this country with a highly exclusive estate aimed at being the ultimate retreat for the wealthy.

Count Agusta Estates will combine a championship golf course with a five-star lifestyle featuring a wellness clinic and an equestrian centre in what is unquestionably the jewel of the Garden Route.

'South Africa's Garden Route is fast becoming this country's own Algarve Coast as the playground of the wealthy,' Count Agusta said.

'We plan to take this a step further by providing a world-class golf course and a world-class residential estate all in one. So often golf estates have truly great golf courses but are lacking in other areas, or vice versa. This development will have it all.'

The intended exclusivity of the estate is reflected in the provision of only 250 residential stands situated in an ecologically protected region of Plettenberg Bay.

Goosen, winner of the European Tour Order of Merit and the US Open in 2001, has been given a brief to design one of the 12 best golf courses in the world, bearing the individual mark of a man who has been playing and winning around the globe since 1990.

'This will be a real challenge for me, but it's one I'm looking forward to,' said Goosen. 'The Garden Route is a very popular holiday destination, and it has certainly become the preferred destination for the world's wealthy. I've been given a spectacular piece of land with which to work, and upon which we can create something truly lasting and impressive.'

Goosen says this will be the first of several golf courses he intends designing within the next couple of years.

'But I'm taking it one step at a time. There are still too many tournaments I want to win,' he said.

The partnership of the 'Goose' and the Count brings together two blue-blooded pedigrees in their respective fields.

Goosen stunned the world with his performances last year, establishing him as one of the finest golfer's of his generation.

Count Agusta is the grandson of Italian aviation pioneer, Count Giovanni Agusta, and heads the family's varied holdings worldwide.

The Agusta family founded two of Italy's largest industrial companies of the 20th Century, which were expanded to include vertical aviation, motorcycle racing and production, and the production of helicopters for large United States concerns such as Bell, Sikorsky and Boeing,

Count Agusta has spent the last decade travelling throughout the Southern Africa region in search of new investment opportunities.

'South Africa has countless assets, but unlike most African countries, it is economically strong and stable with a democratically elected government. It is the gateway to Africa, and is strategically situated along world trade routes with easy access to all major markets,' said Count Agusta.

'The sophisticated infrastructure has developed through a long history of foreign investment, mainly by British, German and American interests. The largest growth industry is tourism, and South Africa can be viewed as one of the worlds most varied, interesting and rewarding destinations.'
