Kigali - The Rwandan government has contracted South Africa's Southern Sun Hotels to manage two new hotels for 15 years, to revamp the tourism industry, which was shattered by the 1994 genocide.

The hotels are owned by the Rwandan government and are being built on sites occupied by old hotels abandoned in 1994. The Intercontinental Kigali, the first five-star hotel to be built in the capital, Kigali, will open on November 30. The Kivu Sun in Gisenyi lies on the banks of Lake Kivu, which borders the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is due to open in mid-December.

Southern Sun retains the exclusive right in certain parts of sub-Saharan Africa to operate hotels under the Intercontinental brand. It has hotels in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique and the Seychelles.

Southern Sun's managing director, Helder Pereira, said Rwanda had recently held its first democratic elections without incident and the country appeared to be peaceful.

"We believe that we will operate at good occupancy levels. There are no other hotels like these in the country," Pereira said.

Southern Sun also secured the contract to provide development advisory services.

The new Kigali hotel is expected to be open in time to host the December conference of the New Partnership for Africa's Development, for which 15 African countries had confirmed their participation, the finance ministry said.
