Eskom Chairman Jabu Mabuza looks at “reigniting our economy” at major property business conference

Eskom Chairman Jabu Mabuza will join global and local business influencers at the SA REIT Conference 2018 in Sandton Central next month.


In his headline address, Mabuza will explore the challenges South Africa has to overcome in reigniting its economy and other big issues facing business in 2018 and beyond.

Mabuza is a distinguished business leader, successful entrepreneur, and has delivered in key roles in the private and public sectors. Mabuza’s corporate acumen and track record of integrity have earned him a reputation for not tolerating interference in his duties as a director.

An advocate of independent business leadership, Mabuza is President of Business Unity South Africa (BUSA), Co-Convenor of the CEO Initiative, and Chairman of Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA).

Over his remarkable corporate career, Mabuza has held several high-profile directorships and is currently represented on local and international boards. He is presently Chairman of Telkom SA SOC Limited, Chairman of the Africa portion of the merged Anheuser-Busch InBev and SAB Miller and, in January 2018, he was appointed Chairman of Eskom.

Mabuza has also presented several papers on Black Economic Empowerment Investment in South Africa, on Small and Medium Enterprise Development and the Role of Business in Transition, both locally and in the UK, USA and Europe.

At the SA REIT Conference 2018, he will highlight the reignition of the South African economy and offer his unique perspective as a seasoned entrepreneur at the forefront of business leadership, governance and transformation.

Mabuza rounds out an impressive line-up of hard-hitting speakers at the SA REIT Conference 2018 - a trailblazing one-day executive conference focused on South Africa’s listed property sector.

International listed property leader Jaap L. Tonckens, CFO of Unibail-Rodamco, will also present a keynote session exploring the latest REIT trends and investor sentiments in Europe, which has become a target destination for the local property sector’s expansion. Tonckens oversees the investments of what is set to become the world’s biggest international retail property owner after the recent announcement of its record-breaking deal to buy the renowned Westfield Group.

The SA REIT Conference takes place on Thursday, 15 March 2018 at Sandton Convention Centre, It is hosted by the SA REIT Association and sponsored by Nedbank CIB.

The SA REIT Association represents South Africa’s R400-billion listed REIT (real estate investment trust) sector. Its members comprise all the country’s listed REITs.



Jabulane (Jabu) Mabuza is the Chairman of Telkom SA SOC Limited. He is widely recognised as a successful entrepreneur. He retired from the position of Group Chief Executive of Tsogo Sun Holdings Ltd, and as Deputy Chairman of Tsogo Sun Holdings. Jabu is the current Chairman of the Casino Association of South Africa (CASA), President of Business Unity South Africa (BUSA), Co-Convener of the CEO Initiative, Chairman of the Africa portion of the merged Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller, Chairman of the Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA). Appointed Chairman of Eskom on 20 January 2018 and subsequently resigned as Executive Chairman of Sphere Holdings on 23 January 2018.

Jabu has held a number of directorships within the Southern Sun and Tsogo Sun Groups. He has served on the Board of South African Tourism for nine years and as its Chairman, for six years, ending May 2012.

He also served on the Board of University of South Africa School of Business Leadership (SBL) and was Country Advisor to the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS). He has served as a member and patron of the South Africa Day initiative (Citizens in Partnership with Government “CPG).

Jabu has presented several papers in Southern Africa, the United Kingdom, United States of America and Europe on Black Economic Empowerment Investment in South Africa, Small and Medium Enterprise Development and the Role of Business in Transition.

Outside of our South African borders, he served on the boards of Tanzania Breweries Ltd (TBL), and Castle Brewing Company in Kenya. He has recently retired as Board member from the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA) in Washington DC and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) in England – UK as an Executive Committee Member. Appointed to the Concordia Leadership Council – USA. He is also the Chairman of the Regional Business Council for World Economic Forum (WEF).

Some awards received include:

- The South African Minister of Tourism presented Jabu with the Lifetime Achiever Award, The Lilizela Tourism Award for his exceptional contribution to the tourism sector on 12 September 2013.

- On 17 October 2015 he received the Business Leader of the Year Award at the South African of the Year (SATY Awards).

- Recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award – EY World Entrepreneur Awards 2016 – Southern Africa on 29 November 2016.

- A Doctor of Commerce Degree (Honoris Causa) was awarded and conferred to him by the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) at a Graduation Ceremony on 05 July 2017. In recognition of his sterling work in his achievements in entrepreneurship and his contribution to the growth of the South African economy.


Jaap L. Tonckens – Unibail-Rodamco, Chief Financial Officer, Member of the Management Board since September 1, 2009. Jaap L. Tonckens joined Unibail-Rodamco's Management Board as General Counsel in 2009 and then became Chief Investment Officer in 2010. He was promoted Chief Financial Officer on July 1, 2012. He retains the supervision of the Group's investments in his current position. Before joining Unibail-Rodamco he was a Managing Director at Endurance Capital, a private equity firm in New York. Then he worked at Morgan Stanley & Co. (1994 - 2008), first in London and then in New York, where he was a managing director in the Leverage & Acquisition Finance department. Prior to that, he worked at Shearman & Sterling in New York and Paris for more than four years. Jaap Tonckens is a graduate of the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and Emory University in Atlanta (USA). Born in 1962, Jaap Tonckens is a Dutch and US national.
