Otis International has launched NextStep, a "breakthrough escalator
product", to mark the 150th anniversary year of the invention of
the safety elevator by its founder, Elisha Graves Otis.
Howard Davey, managing director of Otis South Africa, says: "NextStep
has unique safety features that will eliminate many hazards
associated with escalators. Its 'guarded step', for example,
integrates the step and side skirt into a single module moving in
unison, thus significantly reducing the possibility of entrapment of,
for example, shoelaces or articles of clothing.
"The number of riser cleats has been doubled, resulting in a 50%
reduction in the space between the cleats. The comb plates sit 9%
deeper into the step mesh, reducing the possibility of anything being
caught between the cleats and under the comb plate.
"The step edges have been rounded, reducing the risk of scrapes and
cuts in the event of a passenger falling. Two flat steps at the entry
and exit points - along with understep lighting - assist passengers
with the transition between the moving escalator and the landing,"
Davey says.
The new product will be available in South Africa in October.
