The Cape Town International Convention Centre is set to boost the
exhibition industry in South Africa.
It has already secured 20 exhibitions during its first year of
operation, with space being held for several more.
This is in addition to the 22 international conferences already
booked during the same period.
When the CTICC opens for business in mid-2003, Cape Town will, for
the first time, have a state-of-the-art exhibition facility.
Dirk Elzinga, the CTICC's managing director, says: "Previously, the
lack of a dedicated exhibition venue resulted in a fragmented
trade-fair and exhibition industry, with initiators tending either to
improvise elsewhere or simply to stay away. This is set to change,
which will transform the face of the exhibition industry in the
country."
The CTICC has already secured 20 exhibitions covering various
sectors, including strong Western Cape-based industries such as wine,
fruit and fishing.
Elzinga says the mixture and diversity of the shows are well spread
over the year, and will stimulate consumer and business activity.
The increase, both in quality and in size, of exhibitions and trade
fairs in Cape Town is likely to make an extension of the CTICC
necessary within three to five years.
