The Cape High Court is expected to make a final decision on whether or not a new supermarket can be built in Calitzdorp‘s main street.

Construction was halted last month when a small group of protesters, including businesspeople, obtained a court interdict on the grounds that the new shop would obscure the landmark local NG church and discourage tourists from visiting it. A temporary order to halt construction was issued on May 8.

According to the Kannaland municipality, all the necessary procedures were followed in approving the building plans. The supermarket is expected to bring relief to Calitzdorp residents who at present have to travel to Oudtshoorn to do their grocery shopping.

“It can cost up to R100 just for the transport to Oudtshoorn,” Kannaland speaker Anthony Ewerts said.

The protesters, who do not include church members, declined to comment.
