He has also called on Local Government and Traditional Affairs MEC Thoko Xasa to intervene with the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality “to ensure that it meets its obligations to the community in this regard”, and Safety and Liaison MEC Thobile Mhlahlo to expedite establishment of the community court designated for the Central area.

Introducing a motion in the Bhisho legislature, Stevenson said it was important to preserve the country‘s architectural heritage for the generations to come and the historic part of the Port Elizabeth Central area as a tourist attraction.

“This part of Port Elizabeth has buildings of major historical importance that are being allowed to deteriorate at an alarming rate,” he said. “There has been no real action from the municipality or the provincial heritage authority against slumlords to prevent the further deterioration of these buildings, while rundown buildings are a haven for criminal gangs.”

DA councillor Jeremy Davies had been assaulted at a municipal meeting dealing with the safety and security of the area on Wednesday.

Stevenson said the 2010 World Cup would be an opportunity for the city and the province to showcase itself and firm action should be taken against “slumlords”.
