Stone Towers is a new 6,500 m2 shopping centre in King William’s Town

Stone Towers, the new 6,500 m2 shopping centre in King William’s Town opens next Friday with national supermarket chain Pick ‘n Pay leading the foray of stores which have leased almost 85 per cent of the centre.

The multi-million rand centre, located in Alexander Road, is named after the town’s well documented buildings-in-stone heritage.

By far the largest of the new tenants, Pick ‘n Pay returns to the area as a Pick ‘n Pay Family Store after a 12 year absence.

“When we started thinking about the development about four years ago, there was a huge opportunity to develop a lifestyle shopping centre. Our goal for Stone Towers is to provide a modern and secure environment for busy consumers who value convenience, quality, modern architecture, safety and want to enjoy facilities that are local but world-class,” says Kei Commercial project coordinator Sonnette Stander.

“We worked really hard to ensure that we were able to meet this promise in terms of the tenant mix. We want customers to be able to do the regular family shopping in a trendy environment.  The same environment also aims to offer exciting opportunities for families to unwind,” Stander explains.

The tenant list thus far reflects this goal and includes Health Avenue, an upmarket gym which is located on the upper level. Health and beauty stores which complement customers’ body wellness include Zamz Health & Beauty Clinic and AWE Hair Products.

Leading the charge in the restaurant, cafe and food sector is a Spur Steak Ranch.  Similar outlets include Cappelinnos Café and Coffee Bar, Goodthings, Pie City and Debonairs.

“We have seen a marked increase in the buying power of the area’s 120 000 estimated population. This is expected to continue as the area’s revitalization continues. This centre is one of the first benefits of this renewed interest. Furthermore, according to our research, the centre presents a very good business case and should our expectations be borne out, we will seriously consider expansion.”

Other shops in the centre include the Amathole Valley Pharmacy and various clothing stores such as Humpty Dumpty Kiddies Clothing, Handbags, shoes and accessories, MT Designer Gifts and CuteDoll.

The centre also secured a presence from the country’s four major banks, namely Absa, First National Bank, Nedbank and Standard Bank.

The remaining stores which make up the centre’s 30 stores include Crazy Stores, East Cape Bed Discounters and Spice & Indian Specialties, a travel centre comprising Translux, SA Roadlink and Intercape as well cellular retailers Vodacom and MTN. An internet café and the Post Office will open shortly and a Caltex service station adjoins the centre.

Access to the centre is from Alexandra Road, Durban and Fleet Streets. A total of approximately 300 parking bays are available.

Stone Towers is a development of King William’s Town company Paynigh Property Investments.

Members of the main development team include Sonnette Stander from Kei Commercial who was instrumental in the project’s successful coordination, Huizinga & Associates Architects, Vawda Engineers, AIM Quantity Surveyors, Gordon Builders, SNA Consulting Electrical Engineers, Haines Palmer Reabow & Associates land surveyors, Heat Transformation Systems and various other local and national companies. SMG Africa is responsible for marketing while local teams from Smith Tabata and Risk Management Services provide legal support and security services.

It is estimated that 200 jobs were created during the construction of the centre while another 200 permanent jobs have been created by the centre’s tenants.
