SA HAD to guard against unrealistic expectations that its exports to the US under the US's Africa Growth and Opportunity Act would grow overnight, said SA's clothing export council chairman Jack Kipling.

He said yesterday there was no doubt that the act offering duty-free, quota-free entry into the US of apparel manufactured from eligible SA fabric would result in a significant increase of exports of apparel to the US.

He said that in international trade, countries, not individual companies, developed reputations.

'Growing within our capabilities will be better for the long-term future than excessively rapid growth that could result in a negative image of performance. It takes six times the effort to correct a negative image than it takes to create a positive one,' he said.

While the focus to date had been on gaining eligibility, the focus would have to shift to retaining eligibility.

This follows the announcement that US trade representative Robert Zoellick had signed an order making SA apparel made from regional fabric eligible to enter the US duty free under the act.
