The South African Council of Shopping Centres says centres are responding to pressure to maintain high security levels as shopping activity increases
The South African Council of Shopping Centres, the representative body of nearly 90% of the industry in SA, says centres are responding to pressure to maintain high security levels as shopping activity increases.

Council GM Tracey Fowler says centre managers and owners throughout SA are being "extra vigilant to protect the safety of customers against the threat of robberies and violence".

"In some centres, security has been beefed up to maintain vigilance inside and also to monitor suspicious activity outside the centres," says Fowler.

She says while private security is the backbone of the measures, the police are also reported to be on the alert around large centres where "enormous amounts of revenue are being turned over daily".

Council executive director George Skinner says increased measures over the festive season have been discussed with the body's members.
