Empowerdex, the South African BEE ratings agency, has awarded property management company Hermans & Roman Property Solutions an impressive A grading for overall compliancy.

“That shows we are right on track with our aims and objectives, and well on our way to achieving our target of a AAA rating,” says Leslie Hermans, COO of Hermans & Roman Property Solutions.

“It was imperative for us to gauge where the company was going – relating to not only its own BEE status but the benefits it passes onto other black owned / black empowered entities,” he explains. And while Leslie and CEO Kevin Roman along with the company are satisfied with the results, they are by no means resting on their laurels.

Already, they’re working toward ensuring that their target is achieved by putting some interesting initiatives in place. As the country’s only wholly-black owned property management company operating on a national platform, Hermans & Roman is now identifying organisations of like-mind to work hand-in hand with and to assist Women in Property in developing their individual enterprises.

The company is also taking its Corporate Social Investment initiative straight to the streets by having contributed to the Salesian Institute’s Streetkids Programme. “We identified this organisation as one we would like to invest in, and have partnered with the IPIC Property Group to contribute to the marketing of the Institute and the upliftment of its charges,” adds Leslie. In doing so,  Hermans & Roman have not only contributed financially to the Institute but are also ­ raising awareness about its various programmes.

“Some of our staff members will be visiting the Institute during November 2006 to read to the children,  teach them computer skills and to help them with their writing skills.” In the run up to World AIDS day on 1 December, Hermans & Roman will be implementing an HIV AIDS awareness and education programme for its staff in its three major centres. “It is important that we don’t only react to AIDS when someone close to us is affected,” says Kevin.

Closer to home, the company directors have ensured that Hermans & Roman staff themselves are well looked after. “One cannot be a BEE company if one is not in line with legislation,” says Kevin. “And we are now totally on track, as a property management company, with regards to, for instance, occupational health and safety for both the company as well as our vast amounts of contractors and the physical properties under management.”
