The consortium called for a groundbreaking design concept from architects Bam Zollner to match the functions to be served by the development and the highly evolved IT system that will be used at Providence Place.

'The setting for this village-feel project is magnificent, with uninterrupted views of Table Mountain and maximum exposure for traders on two arterial roads,' said Jonty de la Porte. Providence Place is in Bosmandsdam Road, neighbouring Century City.

'This is no ordinary mixed-use development, its roots are in the cutting edge technology of our time and the interdependence of the various functions must be illustrated by an equally advanced architectural design. Heidi Zollner, in partnership with Chris Bam in the Bam Zollner architectural practice, said: 'Providence Place would not be appropriately served by a design ethos that reflected neo-Classic or domestic-scale influences E prevalent in the area.

Bam Zollner is a young practice that has forged the talents of two independent architects who have been responsible for high profile projects, including the recycling of the former factory premises now known as The Palms Centre on Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock. Their versatility in dealing with historic and industrial buildings and combining them harmoniously was what impressed the Providence Place consortium.

'They achieved a beautiful appearance and excellent function from existing difficult structures and we feel they will E produce an environment for our buyers and occupiers that will be held as an example,' said De la Porte. The buildings, designed by the practice for Providence Place, are contemporary and modular, allowing for shopfronts or industrial roller doors.

'The design is enormously flexible and the visual excitement is generated by the roof lines and proportions of the elevations,' said Zollner. The De La Porte Property Group is facilitating the Province Place development on behalf of a consortium of investors
