A R664-million contract for a new Integrated Terminal at Cape Town International Airport has been awarded to a joint venture comprising building contractors Grinaker-LTA and Stocks Building Africa. Some 74 500 m2 in size, the new terminal is scheduled for completion in December 2009. Stocks will be the leading contractor.
A challenge for the contractors will be phasing the work in order to provide for the continual operation of the airport, comments Grinaker-LTA Building Cape managing director Neil Potgieter. Public safety will also be a priority, he adds.
Stocks’ major projects director, Johan Brink, says that the project will commence with the enabling phase that kicks off with construction of a new drop-off road on the west side of the new car park. Existing tenants and other service providers presently situated in the centre of the airport and around the old control tower building will be relocated to temporary containers and new buildings during this phase. The current parking operations will be incorporated into the new multi-storey parkade and the existing drop-off roads will be relocated to make space for the new terminal and the contractors’ site.
Only after this phase has been completed will construction begin on the new 62 000 m2 departure terminal amalgamated with the existing international terminal and the elevated drop-off road. Alterations to the existing 12 500 m2 international terminal will follow. The enabling phase and new terminal is expected take about two years to complete.
Once the new terminal is commissioned and the existing departure terminal is fully relocated, the old terminal will be demolished. Work on the new integrated arrival’s terminal will be completed by December 2009. Once completed, passengers will be able to use an additional eight new passenger loading bridges that will be connected to the new terminals.
Included in the works is a new, elevated roadway along the front facades. The new terminal will feature a striking, modern structural steel roof and concrete supports in an unusual “Y” design, Grinaker-LTA’s Potgieter says.
The new building will comprise piled foundations and a concrete framed structure ranging in height from three to five floors. Potgieter explains that slabs will mainly be post-tensioned, coffered and troughed, with approximately 12 000 m2 of slabs at high levels – exceeding eight metres.
External civil works comprise the elevated road for access to check-in on the second floor, and 30 384 m2 of premix roads as well as 32 000 m2 of brick paved areas.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of a successful association between the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) and Stocks. Since 1996, the company has been permanently based at the Johannesburg International Airport, and has been involved in close on 20 major projects.
Cape Town International is South Africa's second-largest airport, and a major tourism gateway for millions of visitors to the city each year. It’s estimated that by 2015, 14 million passengers will land in Cape Town annually.
