Marna Van Der Walt, CEO, Gensec Property Services Ltd, has been selected as a finalist for the Business Women of the Year Award.

Since inception in 1980 The Businesswoman of the Year Award has grown in stature to become the premier event of its kind in the country and a notable part of the South African business calendar.

Its primary objective is to recognise the success of women leaders in business, to create role models while celebrating women's contribution to the economy.

Recipients of the award have been some of the country's most powerful women and in the last five years have included Maria Ramos, Director General, Department of Finance (2001), Nicky Newton-King, Deputy CEO, JSE Securities Exchange (2003) and Monhla Hlahla, Managing Director, ACSA (2005).

"I am delighted that this nomination will provide me with a platform from which to raise issues relevant to my industry, and to the South African business sector as a whole," says van der Walt.

"When I set out on my career path - my goal was to prove to a very small, male dominated industry that women can understand business, be successful and even dare to challenge the status quo!"

Since her appointment as CEO in November 2003 van der Walt has facilitated Gensec's growth from a single-client, institutional company to a multi-client property services company, with more than 10 major clients, each generating fees in excess of R5-million each - an annual growth of 17%.
