Melrose Arch is one of the few large development areas in Johannesburg that are fully zoned and where developers can start building immediately. It could possibly double in size this year from its current 100 000 m² of mixed use.
Its Cape-based owners, Property Partners and Amdec, have so far announced only two residential buildings and a sectional-title office project they are developing jointly with Barrow Construction.
Next to be announced will probably be a 25 000 m² precinct that will link into the north end of the existing built section and treble the icon property's leisure, entertainment and retail hub.
Amdec CEO James Wilson will not say when the development will be launched.
But it could also have a new international hotel attached to it. Property Partners' UK shareholder Highneil is negotiating with international operators to open in the new section.
