Shopping centres falling within the ambit of 'hotspot' areas will receive increased police presence, says Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula
Shopping centres falling within the ambit of "hotspot" areas will receive increased police presence and visibility during the festive season, according to Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula.

He was replying to a question from Democratic Alliance MP Roy Jankielsohn.

Asked if the security steps at shopping centres would include contact with shopping centre management and private security companies over the increase of armed robberies at retail outlets, the minister said that they would be consulted regularly.

Asked whether his ministry would consider legislation "forcing shopping centres to designate secure points away from the public for the storage and collection of cash by private security companies", the minister said: "Outcomes of the interventions referred to will determine whether legislation will be necessary."
