THE RECENTLY completed Old Town Square shopping and office complex in Buitenkant Street has added a sense of style to the area and forms part of plans to redevelop the eastern part of the CBD.


The revitalisation of this interesting and historic section of Cape Town is attracting trendy tenants who are offering a wide variety of goods and services, including food, travel advice and interior design from the new centre.


The R5.2 million complex, developed by Solomon Brothers Property Holdings, has been constructed on the site of the old Minelli building, which was half demolished to make way for the new centre, while the buildings on either side have been smartly revamped to tie in with the Old Town Square design.


Based on the Italian piazza style, the central courtyard overlooked by balconies offer an appealing aspect to the entrances of the shops and offices. The concept is engineered to focus on an attractive meeting point for people working in the vicinity, a place where they are able enjoy time out from their work schedules or to meet friends over lunch.


The architects and builders have indeed managed to create wonderful surroundings for trendy shops, restaurants, coffee shops and offices, with ample parking space for visitors and workers alike.


The courtyard in the middle of the piazza has a water feature around which patrons are able to sit and enjoy the palm trees and absorb the surrounding beauty.


The project introduced tight restraints on the contractors who were sensitive to the fact that established businesses were operating in close proximity to the demolition and subsequent re-construction of the development.


This added to the challenge of converting three very different structures and blending them into one.


John Middleton, of Middleton Simpson Architects, explains: 'The architectural styles of the three existing buildings which formed the heart of this project were all very different.


'The Minelli building, in the centre, was demolished to create a gateway and urban space, setting the tone for the remaining two buildings, which have been revamped and consolidated into a single deco-style complex designed to appeal to the creative market, including designers, advertising agencies and the like.'


Jacques du Toit, managing director of Stocks Building (Western Cape), is delighted with the efforts of his team in ensuring that the work was complete ahead of time, with no loss in the quality of the workmanship.


'It was another fast-track project completed on time, with the emphasis on the high-quality workmanship. The success of this chic project will go a long way to fulfilling the plan for the revitalisation of the CBD.'
