Construction on the Nelson Mandela Bay Logistics Park is on schedule, and will be operational before year-end.
The R394-million park, next to the Volkswagen SA plant, is projected to be the workplace for 3,000 people within three years and will create 4,650 temporary jobs during construction.
Nelson Mandela Bay Logistics Park project director Lance Schultz said the development, as a Vision 2020 project of the metro municipality, was being fast-tracked to meet occupation dates of tenants.
"Certain tenants wish to take occupation before the end of the year and we are on track to meet these deadlines", Schultz said.
He said about 70% of the bulk earthworks and infrastructure development was completed.
International logistics, transport and manufacturing company Schnellecke will take occupation of new premises in the park in the next month or two, while specialised packaging and detergent manufacturer Baypac recently announced plans to build a new facility at the park before the end of this year.
Schultz said announcements about the confirmation of additional tenants would be made soon.
He said the development would spur economic growth that would produce further employment opportunities, especially within suppliers to and manufacturers within the park.
"Benchmarking of similar developments around the world have shown that in most cases the development of a park of this nature acts as a catalyst for further growth, increases land values and grows opportunities for host communities," Schultz said.
"It also creates an ideal environment for attracting international companies to the region," he said.
