Out of sight of most Durbanites, a huge city within a city is being planned and developed. Called Bridge City, it will be the new centrepiece of the combined townships of Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu (popularly known as INK), and is second in size only to Soweto of Gauteng.
An urban renewal project, Bridge City is being developed in a partnership between Moreland and the eThekwini Municipality.
It is a Presidential project and is being given the priorities this entails. Already the site near Phoenix North Industrial Park is becoming visible and the first new building has been signed up by the Provincial Health Department – a 300-bed District Level 1 Hospital – for which the earthworks will commence early 2005.
“Bridge City will be a most exciting project, unlike anything that has gone before,” says Moreland’s industrial general manager Val Purves.
“It will provide a high quality urban environment with well developed public spaces. It is soon going to be well known within eThekwini as a dynamic business centre offering people a wide range of goods and services in as a multi-functional town centre, a true urban place with 24 hour activity.
“Bridge City will be a vibrant centre with well designed buildings and streets. Trees will line all the major streets offering shade to pedestrians and to define and add quality to the urban environment. The project will integrate a range of economic activity, including clearly marked areas for informal trade, small business and established retail and entertainment.
“The buildings, landmark facilities and activities will be visible and contribute to a memorable image, a rich tapestry of buildings and architecture. Future development will enhance pedestrian movement with proposed colonnades and arcades.
“The spatial development of Bridge City is part of a recognized broader metropolitan strategic planning and development process that will create a positive and creative image of the area. It will unlock public and private resources by attracting outside finance and investment. Most importantly, it will provide people with improved access to work opportunities within an improved social environment.
Future development will accommodate “movement systems” and hopefully ultimately the development of the railway station and a dynamic multi-nodal transfer station.
Bridge City is destined to make a major impact and provide a new quality of lifestyle and working environment for the people at the gateway to the greater Inanda area.
