BEIJING - The Beijing city government plans to restrict the fast-paced development of the capital's real estate market in 2005 to stave off concerns the sector will overheat, state press reported on Saturday.

"It's necessary to restrict those areas which have blind and excessive construction," Xinhua news quoted Ding Xiangyang, director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform, as saying.

Ding said strict limitations on the construction of office buildings, apartments, hotels and big shopping malls inside the metropolitan centre would be imposed.

The government would also control land supply but increase badly needed lower quality commercial housing so as to maintain steady growth in the sector, Ding said.

No other details were provided.

China's real estate market has boomed amid unprecedented economic growth, forcing the government last year to clampdown on easy credit on concerns money pouring into the sector could result in major property glut.
