Game Stores is reinforcing its already expansive commitment to Cape Town by setting up shop in the heart of one of the city’s most vibrant consumer markets – Mitchell’s Plain.
Fanus Nothnagel, managing director of the 55-outlet Massmart Holdings-owned retail discount chain, says the R35-million new store will open its doors in “The Promenade” shopping centre in the high-density Cape Flats suburb at the end of September.
Why establish another store when seven Game outlets already straddle the Peninsula?
“The reason is two-pronged,” says Nothnagel.
“Firstly, recent in-depth research flagged Mitchell’s Plain as a distinct gap in the otherwise comprehensive coverage by Game of the Cape Town market – so we took a strategic decision to fill it.
“Secondly, countless Mitchell’s Plain residents are ardent Game shoppers – many of whom are commuters who rely on public transport to get to our existing stores. By placing a brand new store on their doorstep, we will make it more convenient, and more satisfying, for them to shop – and win – at Game.”
With Game Mitchell’s Plain, the Peninsula will be on an equal footing with Johannesburg in terms of the concentration of Game stores within its domain.
The existing Game stores are at Canal Walk, N1 City, Parow, Somerset Mall, Tygervalley, Wynberg, and in the Cape Town CBD (Grand Central).
“The opening of Mitchell’s Plain will bring to around R1,5-billion the total 10-year commitment that Game has made to the Peninsula economy – by way of property leases, wages and salaries and establishment costs - for what will then be an eight-store trading footprint in that market,” Nothnagel concludes.
