The Women's Property Network Cape Town Chapter (WPN) will hold a charity derby on Saturday April 3 - the same day as the J&B Met - at Regent Square Office Park, overlooking Kenilworth Race Course.

The event is in aid of Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organisation that works in partnership with local communities to alleviate housing shortages among the very poor.

Families earning a joint income between R800 and R2 500 a month and who own the land on which the house is to be built qualify for assistance.

The family must take part in the building of their own house and the homes of at least four other families through a process known as "sweat equity". They then pay off the cost of the materials to build their home through interest free, non-profit but inflation adjusted "mortgages".

The 50m2 house costs R35 000 to build and consists of two bedrooms, a lounge, bathroom and kitchen, and the market value is estimated at R65 000.

Mortgage payments are paid into a local revolving fund, which is in turn used to initiate new houses in the same community.

"We chose Habitat for Humanity as the beneficiary because, apart from it being property related, our members wanted to support an organisation in which they could get personally involved," says WPN chairman Lisa Blane.

Blane says the charity derby will take place from 12pm, regardless of whether or not racing takes place on the day.

Guests will enjoy a four course meal and entertainment and prizes will be awarded. Racing commentator Francois Wolfaardt will run proceedings.

Otis is the main sponsor. "We encourage everyone in commercial property to come out and support this worthy cause," says Blane. - Cape Times
