A $2m conference centre will be built in the grounds of the Westcliff Hotel in Johannesburg's affluent Westcliff suburb.
While the hotel owners said yesterday the investment represented their confidence in SA, the news was seen by some as a continued encroachment of commercial property on residential areas.
Areas along Jan Smuts Avenue and Oxford Road, north of the city centre, have in particular been invaded by commercial developments, leaving the few remaining residents with no choice but to sell.
Westcliff public relations manager, Laura Vercueil, said concerns of residential property owners around the site of development have been addressed. She said the Westcliff had adopted a sensitive approach encompassing an environmental management plan.
Building has started at the site and the 1260m² conference centre will start trading within the first quarter of next year.
The two-storey building will offer a variety of options including two executive meeting rooms, a smaller boardroom and a main ballroom able to seat 120 delegates.
Nick Seewer, MD of the firm which owns Westcliff Hotel, Orient-Express Hotels, said: 'This investment expresses (our) confidence in the growth of meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions in southern Africa.'
