IMPACT OF THE UN PRECINCT ON SANDTON CBD DURING THE WSSD (World Summit on Sustainable Development) to be held in Johannesburg between 26th August and 4th September 2002.

Road Closures:
There will only be one road closed during the WSSD. Other roads may be partially closed preceding
a motorcade – or lane closures and partial closures will be effected.
The following road impacts have been identified:
5th Avenue: 1 Lane closed from Rivonia Road to Alice Street
Maude Street: Closed from West Street to 5th (area directly in front of the SCC )
West Street: Lane closures between Maude and Alice Streets
Rivonia Road: Part of Rivonia between West and 5th.
Peak Traffic Hours
The United Nations will operate two sessions:
10h00 to 13h00
15h00 to 18h00
Peak traffic flows into and out of Sandton Convention Centre will occur one hour before and after the
UN sessions, i.e. from 09h00 to 10h00, and from 18h00 to 19h00. both these times are outside of
Sandton’s usual peak traffic hours.
The heads of state motorcades will occupy the roads of Sandton for three days of the Summit i.e.
Monday September 2nd, until Wednesday September 4th. Certain roads will need to be closed
temporarily – preceding the motorcade – for a few minutes at choke points and strategic areas to and
from the Sandton Convention Centre for security reasons.
Access into buildings surrounding Sandton Convention Centre (SCC)
Normal access control procedures will apply in all buildings. Additional measures will be instituted
within The Forum whereby its tenants will require additional passes and visitors to the building will be
limited. Jowsco is working closely with these tenants to address any special needs they may have.
All employees of neighbouring buildings must have positive identification documents in their
possession during the summit.
Impact on Parking
No parking will be allowed at The Forum building. No parking will be allowed at Sandton Square but
tenants will be able to utilise Sandton City parking facilities. However, additional security measure
may be imposed. Monthly parking tenants of The Forum will be relocated to alternative parking
Impact on Sandton City trading.
Sandton City trading will operate as usual with additional security measures imposed such as high
Sandton Taxi Rank
The Sandton Taxi Rank will be relocated during the WSSD. Agreement has been reached with the
Taxi Association and a suitable venue is currently being secured.
