Construction and infrastructural company Group Five reported that it is currently busy on a variety of building projects in Kwazulu-Natal from housing and apartment complexes to a Catholic seminary for trainee priests.

The largest of the contracts is the new Oysters apartment complex, in Umhlanga Rocks, consisting of three high-rise apartment blocks Oyster Rock, Oyster Quays and Oyster Schelles.

The complex, which is being developed by Lighthouse Developments, a subsidiary of Nedcor, will offer residents a lock-up and go luxury living with panoramic sea views over the Umhlanga Rocks lighthouse.

The combined value of the apartments is R156-million.

Contracts director at Group Five Kwazulu-Natal Grahame Carver said the Umhlanga-based team is working around the clock to complete the first apartment block by January 2004. Final completion of the project is scheduled for June 2004.

The Oyster Rock contract was awarded first place in the Bifsa annual National Health and Safety competition for contracts valued between R50-million and R200-million, with a commendation for scaffolding excellence.

In December 2003, Group Five handed over the first of 133 units at the Riverside Park Retirement Estate in Durban North, which has attracted huge interest from buyers.

Group Five's Housing and Kwazulu-Natal operations are reportedly on track to complete the complex by May 2004.

The contract, valued at R32,3-million, comprises two- to four-bedroom units with one or two bathrooms, and a choice of internal finishes.

Residents will have the use of a swimming pool and communal centre with a lounge, dining room, kitchen, library and reception area.

Further inland, in Howick, a Group Five team is building a seminary for the German Pallottine Catholic Order, providing facilities for up to 36 trainee priests from sub-Saharan African countries.

The R10,5-million contract includes three double-storey residence blocks with an administrative building that houses a dining room, fully equipped kitchen, training rooms, offices and accommodation for the priests.

The external face-brick is decorated with a pre-cast coping manufactured specifically for the contract Engineering News 2004/03/09 Printer
