PROPERTY owners in the retail sector have to face the reality that tenant rentals provide limited opportunities for income growth, says Old Mutual Properties.

However, its specialist new ventures division says potential exists for property owners to increase revenue by extending their core business and developing schemes designed to add value to tenants.

Andrew Weinberg, executive at the new ventures division, says the alternative sources of revenue include advertising, speciality retail programmes involving temporary merchandising units , exhibitions, and innovations to information technology and customer relations management.

Weinberg says Old Mutual Properties owns part of a subsidiary firm focusing on shopping mall media. Point of Presence (POP) handles signage and advertising sales within the malls and parking areas.

POP plans media campaigns and develops sponsorship opportunities in malls, including the indoor climbing rock at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, outside Durban.
