STRATEGIC planning in facilities management will be a key focus of a major international conference to be held in Gauteng in November.
The fifth annual Facilities Management World Africa Conference will bring together leading facilities management practitioners from around the globe, with a strong focus on participation from other African countries.
It will be held at the Sandton Hilton, in Johannesburg, from November 19 to 21.
Delegates will include suppliers of facilities management products and services, vendors, policy- makers and users.
The conference is endorsed by the South African Facilities Management Association (Safma) and the Interior Plantscaper Association.
Safma will also host a facilities management industry black-tie function on November 19 in conjunction with the conference.
Thora Cilliè, conference manager of Terrapinn, a conference organisers and events management company, says the conference will have a strategic focus, with several topics on facilities management business models.
It will draw on the views and expertise of leading business professionals, customers and providers, from Africa and around the world.
"Managing a facility used to be only associated with operations and maintenance duties
"But today, a diverse array of responsibilities have come to be associated with facilities management," she says.
"This opens up opportunities for ambitious facilities managers who are at the cutting edge of career change.
"Businesses and government are realising that maintaining a wellmanaged and highly efficient facility is critical to long-term success."
New technologies, security issues and health concerns are having a major effect on the importance of and the need for facilities managers, Cilliè says.
Topics to be covered at the conference will include new facilities management business models and strategies; energy management; asset management and property control; maximising the value of technological infrastructure; space planning, public-private partnerships in facilities management; and privatisation and outsourcing, among others.
