Freedom Property Fund announced the appointment of Dr Nakedi Mathews Phosa as an independent non-executive director of the real estate capital growth fund from 11 May 2015.

Patrick Burton, Chairman of the Board of Freedom Property Fund, comments: “We welcome the appointment of Dr Mathews Phosa and look forward to his invaluable contributions. In line with Freedom's vision, the Board is confident Dr Phosa's wealth of experience and insight will be valuable in executing its strategy.”

Freedom listed on the JSE Main Board less than a year ago, in June 2014, introducing unique property capital growth opportunity for investors, coming from the fund's diverse and growing portfolio, which includes residential, commercial and industrial property assets of R1,56 billion. Its assets comprise income-yielding properties and developments complemented by a secured pipeline of around R10 billion, as well as a long-term development pipeline in decentralised areas throughout South Africa.

Dr Phosa, an attorney by profession, opened the first black law practice in 1981 in Nelspruit. In 1994 he was appointed as the premier of Mpumalanga Province and in 2007 he was elected as the Treasurer-General of the ANC, a position he held until 2012.

Dr Phosa is Chairperson of Special Olympics South Africa, Innibos Arts Festival and Chairperson of Council of the University of South Africa (UNISA).  Commercially Dr Phosa sits on a number of listed and unlisted company boards. He is a director of listed companies Value Group, Waterberg Coal Company, Jubilee Platinum, Renaissance Capital and Bauba Resources. He also sits as a trustee to the Afrikaans Handels Instituut (AHI).

Freedom’s strategy is to deliver capital growth to its shareholders, boost its portfolio of income-producing properties, roll out its developments and secure a growing pipeline of new development.
