In 2009, the global recession coupled with the believed withdrawal of the building’s anchor tenant resulted in an incomplete structure of two storeys being built on the site. The scheme that was then named Roggebaai Square had stalled, rendering one of the prime parcels of land on the foreshore of the Cape Town CBD unable to reach its potential.
But as of December 2012, that has changed. Filcon Projects – the contractor working on both the current and failed schemes – is hard at work completing what they did not get the chance to complete a few years a go. A crane has been erected on site, and builders have already near-doubled the height of the structure that has occupied the site for years.
A new scheme is deserving of a new name, thus Roggebaai Place was born. It will be significantly different to the building that was previously due to occupy the site, with numerous design changes and an extra floor having been added to it, bringing the total floor count to 14. A double-volume ground floor will welcome guests into the entrance lobby, with retail space opening up onto the square, which is surrounded by hotels and office spaces and is close to the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
Office users will also enjoy the added convenience of luxury apartment blocks and MyCiTi bus stations being a quick walk away from the building. Six levels of parking in Roggebaai Place will provide ample bays to compliment this high-end offering. The façade will consist of modern glass, steel and concrete finishes, lending the building a domineering corporate flair.
This will truly be the perfect home for large scale national tenants looking to base themselves amidst the hustle and bustle in the centre of Cape Town’s financial district.
