A R23 million retail centre north of Table View in Cape Town is currently under construction by WBHO.
West Coast Retail Centre, which is being constructed for Garden Cities facilitated by Retail Africa in Sunningdale, will include Pick ‘n Pay, Woolworths and Clicks as anchor tenants with approximately 40 speciality shops and convenience outlets. Parking will be provided for some 420 cars.
Some 6 500m2 of trading area is to be created by WBHO as per the fast track programme with the structure and roof for Pick ’n Pay to be completed within only two months.
For the extensive length of eaves beams required on the project, WBHO has developed an effective precast solution in conjunction with the engineers, Sutherland Associates, which has proved to be both cost effective and faster than conventional construction in this particular case.
dhk Architects has designed the centre incorporating a West Coast vernacular style including elements such as a courtyard, a roofed fresh air pedestrian street and the convenience line shops. The courtyard will create space for coffee shops to spill into and will be landscaped with trees. Vines for dappled shade and a fountain will add to the village character.
Other architectural components such as pitched roofs, long barn-shaped buildings and the use of robust materials like timber, masonry, stonework, cobbles, quarry tiles and natural stone will complement the West Coast architecture.
WBHO recently built a similar shopping centre in the nearby area of Melkbosstrand.
