Auction Alliance will take a national monument and the only hotel in the Karoo town of Prince Albert to auction in September
“The Swartberg Hotel is a charming three star Victorian hotel. Established as a hotel in 1864, the hotel is now one of 19 national monuments in the village and is still the only hotel in Prince Albert to date,” comments Gareth Currie of Auction Alliance.

Prince Albert is situated less than 400 km out of Cape Town, on the southern edge of the Great Karoo, nestling under the majestic Swartberg Mountains. The small town is renowned for its warm hospitality and offers a perfect opportunity for a quiet and relaxing getaway from busy city life.

The hotel accommodation consists of 10 double/twin rooms, three single rooms and five garden cottages that provide a total of 39 beds.  All rooms have en-suite bathrooms, satellite television, telephones and coffee making facilities. The garden cottages as well as three double bedrooms in the main building are equipped with air-conditioning. A large conference room, seating up to 40 people, is located in a separate building.  In addition, the site enjoys a pool area with a thatched boma and a reed covered terrace.

In true Karoo style, where hospitality is emphasised by good food, the hotel is equipped with a restaurant, coffee shop, deli store and ladies bar. The hotel’s restaurant, The Victoria Room, serves traditional Karoo cuisine every night, while a separate coffee shop serves breakfasts and light meals throughout the day. The restaurant can normally seat up to 40 covers however when the sliding doors between the Victoria Room and the Coffee Shop are opened up, the area can accommodate up to 70 people. The deli store sells homemade goods such as meringues, biscotti, handmade sweets and preserves, all of which are made in the hotel’s kitchen.

The property currently has two tenants in place with informal leases. The tenants are Prince of Africa, which is situated on the southern periphery of the street frontage. At present there is no official lease in place, but the premises have been occupied by the current business for more than nine years. The northern periphery of the street frontage is occupied by the Swartberg Arms steakhouse.

“It is not often that such a successful hotel, in such a picturesque part of South Africa comes onto the market, with all of its assets included in the sale.” says Jacques Coetzer of Auction Alliance.

The auction takes place at 12pm on September 21 at the Crystal Towers Hotel & Spa, Century City.
