The value of commercial and residential building activity comes down

The nominal value of recorded building plans passed by larger municipalities during January 2010 decreased by 17,4% (-R644,3 million) compared with January 2009

The largest decrease was reported for non-residential buildings (-53,6% or -R598,5 million), followed by residential buildings (-8,6% or -R138,8 million), whilst additions and alterations increased during the above-mentioned period (9,4% or R93,0 million).

The value of buildings reported as completed to larger municipalities (at current prices) during January 2010 decreased by 30,7% (-R1 139,4 million) compared with January 2009. The decrease of 30,7% (-R1 139,4 million) in the value of buildings reported as completed during January 2010 was due to decreases reported for residential buildings (-40,8% or -R840,2 million) and additions and alterations (-37,0% or -R356,6 million).
