To be located between the centre's entrances 4 (at Panarotti's) and 12 (The Breadbasket), the parkade will accommodate 511 vehicles once completed thereby providing a greater number of parking bays for shoppers. The roof of the parkade will also be used for parking. To be undertaken by Afritects (architects), the project has been estimated to cost owners of the centre Pareto Limited, R75 million.
The parkade will connect directly to the mall's upper level through a new passage to be introduced between the centre's YDE (Young Designer's Emporium) and Identity stores. Shoppers will also be able to access the mall directly from the parkade through the existing basement parking, linked to the mall's lower level. Two access ways to the parkade will be located near the centre's existing entrances 4 and 12, thereby ensuring that these entrances remain prominent and convenient.
Certain delicate elements will be introduced in the building's design to bring it in line with international trends, without being overbearing. For one, the use of glass curtain walling and smooth finishes will ensure that designated lift lobbies are bright and airy. Scenic lifts will be used on the side near entrance 4 and two other lifts will be installed inside the mall close to the link with the parkade for the convenience of shoppers.
The site of the parkade was selected based on several considerations between Pareto Limited and Afritects. Firstly, it offers the best connectivity with the existing mall, for both pedestrians and motorists visiting the centre; and secondly – it will offer the least inconvenience to shoppers during construction, compared to other options considered.
The new parkade should be completed some time in the last quarter of this year.
As the entrance / ramp leading to the entrance 11 (Barnyard Theatre) undercover parkade will be closed for a period of time during the construction of the new parkade; a temporary access to this area will be created in Acacia Street – the service road running in front of the Keystone Office Complex. This temporary entrance will be supported by prominent directional signage guiding patrons to it.
During this period, Cresta Shopping Centre will encourage its shoppers to consider utilising the alternative undercover parkade which may be accessed off Republic Road (entering the centre through entrance number 3 (Woolworths – Lower Level) and entrance number 9 (leading to Home Etc. WWW Computers, Mr Price Home, Ackermans, Boardmans, Loads of Living, etc.)
