MOUNT AYLIFF -- Work has started on a local industrial park here that will serve people from Mount Ayliff, Tabankulu, Mount Frere, Mount Fletcher, Umzimkulu, Bizana, Flagstaff and Lusikisiki, and arm them with business skills and information.
Speaking during the sod-turning, Marshal Swana of the Presidential Project Team said the project
was the result of the government's intervention in the apartheid-ravaged towns.
He said that in 1996 the government had nominated Butterworth, Cala, Port St Johns, Umtata and
Mount Ayliff to be helped economically and with the job creation.
These towns have been battling with mismanagement, crime and corruption.
Swana said the R2million industrial park would have a tele-centre, a farmers' support centre,
workshops and offices.
"Fifteen entrepreneurs have already been appointed to run businesses like sewing, sweet production
and metalworks," he said.
The park is the brainchild of the Mount Ayliff Development Agency which was formed by students in
various schools in Transkei.
Nozizwe Vakalisa, who runs a restaurant at Mount Ayliff, said the project would help many people
who did not have the chance of going to other towns for help.
The construction is expected to take six months and more than 200 jobs will be created during the
building.
