Motorists should drive carefully through roads under construction in Gauteng as the temporary stormwater drainage systems were not designed to withstand the heavy rains, the SA
National Roads Agency Limited said on Wednesday.
Sanral spokeswoman Priya Pillay said the Gillooly's Interchange, west of Johannesburg, was "quite dangerous today and yesterday" and motorists should be careful.
While the agency could not identify each risk area, it said slowing down wherever there was road construction was advisable, especially in lower lying areas.
"These systems are regularly inspected and maintained but being temporary structures they are not designed to withstand the heavy downpours that Gauteng has been experiencing over the last two weeks resulting in overtopping of some of the road sections."
The temporary systems would be replaced once construction was completed.
