The centre recently donated a substantial amount towards the newly launched Community Active Protection (CAP) scheme for the Balfour Park and Gresswold suburbs. The scheme has been operational since December 2008 and already there has been a marked reduction in crime in these areas.
The donation goes towards a dedicated CAP vehicle and operations which actively patrol the two suburbs. CAP is a proactive, integrated, community driven scheme which is designed to protect public spaces by becoming a visible deterrent to criminals.
In addition to this, new security cameras overlooking the whole centre, including the parking area, have been installed. CCTV cameras are known to have the dual benefit of deterring would-be offenders and promoting safety within shopping centres.
Shirley Mathomes, Balfour Park Shopping Centre manager, says that although crime in the entire surrounding community needs attention, there has been a marked decrease in the number of criminal activities taking place in the months since the new security measures were implemented.
“The increased security measures have helped reduce the incidence of crimes, making our shoppers and the rest of the community feel safer,” says Mathomes. “Crime is a community issue and the steps we’re taking at the centre are intended to make the entire community a safer place.”
Balfour Park has recently undergone a complete revamp, and the security upgrade was an important part of the renovation.
