Achievements in two different fields of endeavour were marked this week with the opening of an R18-million expansion to a Mandela Bay partnerships‘ premises.
After establishing a pioneering high-tech medical complex in five houses in Cape Road, partners in the Eye and Laser Institute decided it was time to expand.
They bought up adjoining properties and transformed these into three specialised theatre units and wards to meet the demand from patients, some of them from overseas.
“The institute has experienced steady growth and theatre occupancy levels were at such a level that we could not continue growing unless we expanded,” said business manager Dr Andries Marais.
As a result of the expansion, institute staff will double to more than 60 in the next few months.
Marais – a former medical doctor who now manages the institute – said the expansion had added a further 900m² to the previous 1800m². It had also created the opportunity to add the latest state-of-the art equipment.
