EAST LONDON -- Shane Collinson, newly appointed general manager of the Hemingways Casino Resort on Western Avenue, could be eyeing the city's property market next year.
Collinson, who has spent a number of years in managerial positions in the Eastern Cape casino
industry, says he and his family plan to settle here.
A product of the Graduate Institute of Management and Technology, he started his career in gaming
with Sun International at the Wild Coast Sun in 1998. During the next few years he worked at the
Fish River Sun and Trans Sun, which at some stage ran five operations in the former Transkei.
Collinson held the position of slots manager and acted as general manager for Tsogo Sun's Champions
Casino in Witbank. He has also played a big part in the pre-opening and opening of the Emnotweni
Casino at Nelspruit by the Southern Sun group in 1997.
Collinson is described as a hands-on manager and is regarded by his Southern Sun bosses as someone
who has the ability to generate enthusiasm and motivation by effective delegation and communication.
Meanwhile, preparations have swung into top gear for the opening of the R222 million Hemingways
Casino Resort, scheduled for the end of September.
Collinson says he is currently busy with the training programme of casino dealers. Tsogo Sun hopes
that Hemingways will bring a touch of Key West in Florida to East London.
Hemingways will be the fifth casino to be opened under the Tsogo Sun banner. Collinson says
Hemingways will have exciting family entertainment and retail components, with a Southern Sun hotel
to be built in the second phase.
The entertainment will have a strong outdoors focus, including the latest themed adventure golf, a
specialised mountain bike trail, competition standard wall climbing, bank shot basketball and
volleyball courts. There will also be an informal craft market in the outdoor entertainment area
showcasing traditional crafts.
In addition to three cinemas, he says there will be a special children's entertainment area with
negotiations now being finalised for state-of-the-art video games, including 3D interactive games
with wrap-around sound.
A safe play area, Tumble Town, and creche will be staffed by qualified adult supervisors.
The retail section at Hemingways will comprise exclusive boutiques and food outlets such as a bar,
family restaurant and coffee shop.
Tsogo Sun chief executive Jabu Mabuza emphasised that his company will pay an integral and
important role in its social responsibility ethic in the casino.
