EAST LONDON -- Two German executives and their South African counterpart will sign a property deal this morning with Buffalo City mayor Sindisile Maclean

EAST LONDON -- Two German executives and their South African counterpart will sign a property deal this morning with Buffalo City mayor Sindisile Maclean to usher in the long-awaited construction here of the R165million WeizenGold Beer brewery.
The brewery, which is to be built at the Airport Industrial Park, is expected to form part of phase
one of the East London Industrial Development Zone. Construction may start in June.
Present at today's signing will be Dr Andreas Weideneder, family member of the Weideneder Brewery
in Bavaria and investor in the brewery, Hubertus Kruse, director of the German investment group,
BCG, and WeizenGold managing director designate Gerhard de la Porte.
"We have come here not only to build a brewery, but also to introduce a beer culture," said
Weideneder, whose family has for 100 years run the Bavarian brewery in Tann, which dates back to
1439.
De la Porte said that the group had also asked for quotes from local bottling plants. "If they meet
the high specifications, the bottles and labels could be manufactured in South Africa," he said.
Weideneder said the signing today of the final documents would bring the site under the ownership
of WeizenGold.
"The council, the Centre for Investment Marketing in the Eastern Cape and the IDZ's Peter Miles
have been extremely helpful in creating an investor friendly atmosphere," said De la Porte.
Weideneder said the decision three years ago to come to East London was also based on its history
of German settlers, who over 140 years ago produced wheat beer in the area for local consumption.
"Other factors are the proximity of the port, the good infrastructure, the clean city and good
quality water," he said.
Weideneder said that through Dispatch Media director Archie Nkonyeni's Worthy Trade black
empowerment group it was also possible to draw together a wide variety of business people and
investors.
"It is the willingness from people like Archie Nkonyeni to mobilise the community that made it
possible for us to get involved in such a project," he said.
De la Porte said that through Nkonyeni's group it was also possible for WeizenGold to utilise the
beer outlets and distributors across the Eastern Cape.
Weideneder said there was support for the project in Bavaria, adding: "Other initiatives to build
up links and partnerships with Bavaria could follow after this."
"We are currently actively promoting Bavarian and East London ties with the intention of attracting
additional investors," said De la Porte.
Kruse that this was the first financing project to promote medium size businesses. "This is a pilot
project for the KfW, the state-owned main financier of the project, and will also fulfil its
development role in emerging economies," he said.
"KfW was extremely positive about the project and welcomed the opportunity to finance such a
project in South Africa," said Kruse.
"If successful this formula will be implemented in other countries, as well as other South African
projects," said De la Porte.
