Stefanutti Stocks said that a consortium of JSE-listed companies it was leading had won a civil works contract for Eskom’s Kusile power station in Mpumalanga.

Willie MeyburghCivil engineering and construction group Stefanutti Stocks said yesterday that a consortium of JSE-listed companies it was leading had won a civil works contract for Eskom’s Kusile power station in Mpumalanga.

CE Willie Meyburg said the four-year project was worth nearly R3bn, and would be split equally among the four participating companies.

The other three companies in the joint venture are Group Five, Basil Read and WBHO.

“This is indeed good news in the current bad market environment, even if we have to share the contract with three other companies,” Meyburg said.

“It is great news to be awarded a contract like this because at least it gives us more work to do for the next four years, especially when everything seems to be negative and uncertain right now,” he said.

The contract had grown Stefanutti Stocks’ order book to R7bn, which was enough to see the company through to at least 2010.

Construction of the civil works for the 4800MW Kusile power station in Witbank will start next month.

Kusile is Eskom’s second, cleaner coal fired power station after Medupi, being built in Lephalale, Limpopo, for about R80bn. A consortium led by construction and engineering firm Murray & Roberts, and which includes Grinaker LTA and Concor, was awarded the civil works contract for Medupi.

“The other positive thing about this (Kusile) contract is that it shows that Eskom is not just giving out its contracts to the same few companies, but is spreading the cake around to everyone,” Meyburg said.

With state-of-the-art technology, Kusile will be the first in SA to cut sulphur dioxide emissions. When completed it will be one of the world’s biggest coal-fired power stations, employing 5000 people in the first 18 months and 8000 at the peak of construction.
