SARB keeps Repo rate unchanged

Consumers will breathe a sigh of relief after the South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.5%.

Growth in the value of outstanding credit balances in the South African household sector was on a rising trend in the first seven months of 2018, with these balances amounting to a total of R1 587,5 billion at the end of this period.

Although relatively few Capetonians are aware of this further step in the campaign to limit their water consumption, the Cape Town City Council has just approved a range of amendments to the water by-laws. 

Recent tight economic times have seen certain big retail centres experience a reduction in rentals, turn-over and profits.

Relief at Q4 2017 GDP figures

Better than expected GDP figures for 2017 released today brought sighs of relief all round after an unquestionably tough year economically for South Africa.

South Africa’s economy grew by 3.1% in the fourth quarter of 2017 ending the year on a strong footing, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) announced on Tuesday.

The value of outstanding credit balances in the South African household sector, amounting to R1 548,9 billion at the end of January 2018, showed growth of 3,7% year-on-year (y/y) over the 12-month period.

The value of outstanding credit balances in the South African household sector increased by 3,8% to R1 542,8 billion in 2017, up from a low of 0,7% in 2016.

In his speech yesterday, the Minister of Finance announced that “the rates and brackets for transfer duties on the sale of property will be adjusted to provide relief to middle-income households.”
