Road construction underway in the Sandton CBD is set to continue for most of 2016 with the City of Johannesburg investing R180 million in massive improvements to roads and pavements in Sandton Central - SA’s cosmopolitan financial and commercial hub.

The number of people using public and alternative transport into Sandton has grown since the official launch of the EcoMobility World Festival.

Murray & Roberts issued a statement confirming the bridge support structure collapsed on M1, close to Grayston Drive in Sandton.

Gauteng Transport MEC Ismail Vadi says there has been a substantial increase in passengers travelling on the Gautrain since the launch of the City of Johannesburg’s EcoMobility World Festival, last week.

Getting around the Sandton CBD is going to be different during the month-long festival that introduces new pedestrian zones, cycling lanes, public transport lanes, public transport resources and managed vehicle access on a few streets.

As Johannesburg prepares for the month-long festival, intended to provide the public with an urban ecomobile experience, Melrose Arch is participating as a park-and-ride venue into Sandton, providing 200 dedicated parking bays for commuters using the Gautrain and Gautrain busses.

The EcoMobility World Festival 2015, which takes place in Sandton for the entire month of October, will leave a positive lasting legacy for not only the City of Johannesburg, but also Gauteng and, ultimately, the entire southern African region.

Getting around the Sandton CBD during the World EcoMobility Festival, from 1 October to 31 October 2015, is going to be different from usual. Driven by the City of Johannesburg, the upcoming EcoMobility Festival is part of the city’s plan to decongest traffic and give preference to public transport, bicycles and pedestrians on our streets.

Sandton Central Management District today announced that it will launch an information campaign to help those who work, visit and live in Sandton to get to grips with getting around the Sandton CBD during the World EcoMobility Festival, from 1 October to 31 October 2015.

The Sandton Central Business District (CBD) will become Africa’s only car-free CBD for the month of October as large sections of the roads will be closed off and focused on cycling and pedestrian activities such as pop-up restaurants, entertainment stands and food stalls.
