GDP recovers to 66.1% growth

The South African economy began its journey to recovery during the third quarter of 2020 - this after the national lockdown aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19 had sent it into a tailspin.

As a result of the lockdown in South Africa, 14% of construction companies permanently shut their doors, according to a survey by Statistics South Africa released in May 2020.

The South African Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contracted by 1.4% in the fourth quarter of 2019, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has revealed.

SA exits technical recession in third quarter

South Africa has come out of a technical recession with the economy growing by 2.2% in the third quarter of 2018, said Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).

The first three quarters of 2017 saw building activity in the South African market for new private sector-financed housing (see explanatory notes) contracting in both the planning and construction phases compared with the corresponding period last year, based on data released by Statistics South Africa.

Bryte Insurance, a proactive business risk specialist, today released its Construction Activity Monitor for the period ending June 2017.
