Private sector-financed building activity (see explanatory note) in the South African market for new housing showed continued diverging trends on specifically a segment level in the first eight months of 2018, which caused the planning phase of new housing to have improved whereas the construction phase has contracted over this period.

Data published by Statistics South Africa with regard to private sector-financed residential building activity (see explanatory note) showed that the planning phase of new housing improved in the first seven months of 2018, whereas the construction phase contracted.

The planning phase of residential building activity in the South African market for new housing, as reflected by the number of building plans approved by local government authorities, recorded relatively strong growth in the first five months of 2014 April 2014 compared with the corresponding period last year.

The FNB/BER building confidence index rose for the second consecutive quarter. The index gained 5 points, from 32 to 37 during 1Q2013. This is the highest reading since 2010.

Building Boom Builds Rural Economy

Rural South Africans, almost neglected for so long, are being empowered  as  schools, shopping malls, roads and residential developments in often, remote areas, have seen increasing development. 

Building activity in the South African market for new housing remained subdued in 2012 compared with the period of 2005 to 2008.

Building activity in the South African market for new housing showed some improvement towards late 2012, with both the planning and construction phases recording higher levels of activity in November compared with a year ago.
