The 2 600m² SuperSpar anchoring the Philani Mall in Umlazi, Durban set a national trading record for the chain on its opening day, said Peter Sparks, executive director of SA Corporate Real Estate Fund which owns the centre.

“The SuperSpar’s turnover on opening day eclipsed that achieved at the Elim Spar in the Hubyeni Shopping Centre in Limpopo which opened last year and was recorded as the best Spar opening day in South Africa.”

As the latest addition to the SA Corporate portfolio, which is managed by Old Mutual Investment Group Property Investments, Philani Mall serves 4 000 Umlazi families in sections U and Y, as well as residents on either side of motorway 35 from the intersection of main road 35 and the Winkelspruit-Pietermaritzburg roads all the way eastwards to Isipingo.

“Their shopping has been traditionally been in the Durban CBD, Isipingo and Prospecton and has meant lengthy round trips by car, bus and taxi to bring purchases home,” Sparks said.

“Because of the topography in the area and lack of road links, Umlazi Mega City, another successful SA Corporate property, is also a lengthy trip. “ National tenants, including a Build It hardware outlet in the Spar network, account for 75% of space in the first phase of Philani Mall.

With a second phase of 2 000m², Philani Mall will have a total lettable area of 12 930m² and parking for 234 cars. It will also house a separate service station site.

Philani Mall has provided employment and new opportunities for more than 1 000 people.
