The 6th annual IPD/SAPOA Property Investment Conference scheduled for next month is tackling global uncertainty head-on.

Property-Housing-ResidentialAt a time when international markets are abuzz with talk of economic downturn, the conference offers a no-holds-barred assessment of where savvy property investors should be looking for untapped investment alternatives.

The array of topics, designed around the conference theme of "Opportunity in Uncertainty", highlights the range of new and emerging investment avenues that property investors can consider.

The IPD, a world leader in real estate investment measurement, has partnered with SAPOA to present what is arguably the premier property event of the year.

“We strive to offer delegates an in-depth and intelligent look at issues affecting real estate investment, debated by top-notch local and international experts.

This niched event is a must for anyone who wants to understand the key trends shaping the sector in the face of uncertainty, not only in SA, but globally,” says IPD SA managing director Stan Garrun.

Trekking into African property markets is just one of the options to be debated.

Much has been said about SA property investors moving into cross-border investments in recent years, but a global economic slowdown could either scotch these projects or accelerate the quest for new opportunities further afield.

In a session entitled "Core and Opportunity", the spread of projects open to investors in Africa and beyond will be examined by Nigerian property specialist Akinola Olaware and Rupert Nabarro, chairman of IPD Holdings UK. Key topics include diversification, portfolio construction and off-location investments.

Investors looking for new investment channels closer to home should make a note to attend the session simply entitled "The Environment."

It's widely accepted that the green building movement is neither a fad nor a flash in the pan, but indeed offers the promise of effective and efficient investment.

A full session is devoted to examining the nitty gritty of green property investments, a trend that is gathering momentum internationally and is energetically driven by tenants.

After a presentation on the European experience by Christopher Hedley of IPD Occupiers UK, Bruce Kerswill of the fledgling Green Building Council of SA will speak about SA's soon-to-be-released green accreditation system and its advantages to both users and investors.

For delegates wanting to brush up on property investment fundamentals, it's worth kicking off with the property investment master class being co-facilitated by respected property academics Tony Key, professor of real estate economics at Case Business School in the UK and Francois Viruly, professor of property studies at Wits University in Johannesburg.

Other session themes designed to whet the appetite of investors include: "Good Times, Bad Times", which aims to help investors navigate strong performance in tough times; and "Growth and Income", which will look at the drivers of growth in a tight market.

The conference will take place on 7 and 8 August at The Pavilion Conference Centre at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
